Illuminate Your Space with The Power of Neon Colours

Interior designing encapsulates a wide range of interior design styles, textures, and colour schemes. Although light and pastel shades never go out of fashion, they can make the appearance of any room a bit dull especially if the light colours are used alone.

To bring about a vibrant and bright dimension to any room, a good idea is to add neon or fluorescent elements. Neon colours help project a lively and energized atmosphere which might not be possible in a pastel colour scheme.

Using a few techniques and tricks, you can add a unique and artistic touch to any room using neon colours. It will appear fresh to the eye as it will be considered an unconventional design. Here, we will describe a few things which you should keep in mind on how to include neons tastefully in your interior design.

Identify The Rooms That Will Use Neon Colors

The first thing to consider is to identify the rooms of your house for which you will use neon colours in your interior design in Singapore. Once they have been identified, it will be easier for you to plan everything else accordingly.

Unlike common belief, neon colours are not just for kids rooms and play areas. You can use them in your living room, bedroom, dining room, and even your kitchen.

In a living room, you can have neon coloured wall accents to go with the other elements of the room. One sofa or a few cushions can be of neon colour to go with plain walls.

For the bedroom, you can have neon coloured wall hangings, bed sheets, pillows, cushions, or throws. For the dining room, you can have one wall painted in neon colour or a neon patterned wallpaper on one wall. You can complement it with bold and bright table mats and napkins. For the kitchen, you can have a few cabinets of neon shade or the accents of cabinets outlined in bold colours.

Keep the other elements in the kitchen neutral so as not to overwhelm the kitchen’s appearance.

Choose Solid Colors

When choosing neon shades for any room, try to use solid colours instead of patterns. Solid colours help to bring out the vibrancy and brightness in a room while still looking decent.

They help in adding a youthful touch to a room and makes a statement by transforming the interior design completely. Printed and patterned designs appear cluttered and messy.

They can appear harsh and overbearing which is not pleasing to the eye. Some people are especially sensitive to bold colours but bold colours as patterns on some elements in your room might just be downright annoying to some people.

You want your house to project a welcoming and open vibe and a patterned neon color might do just the opposite. You can use neon colours in solid chunks for various items in a room. For example, use a solid bold-coloured decor item on a neutral table or a bright solid coloured sofa next to a pastel-coloured wall.

Tone Down The Rest of the Room

Since neon colours are already so bold and bright, it is one of the most important aspects in interior designing to balance them out with some other colours and textures. Having too many bold and fluorescent colours in a room will appear quite conflicting and vulgar.

Hence, toning down the rest of the room plays a pivotal role in enhancing the neon shades and bring all elements of the room together. If you are using a neon coloured throw over a sofa, your sofa should be able to tone it down.

This can be possible if the sofa has a solid neutral shade such as black, grey, or navy. If one wall of any room is painted in a bold color, make sure that the other furniture and decor items are of neutral and light shades to give it a more rustic look.

Adding a few small bold elements here and there will complete the look in such a room. You can be a bit more generous in using neon colours for a kids room but the other elements should be completely neutral to tone down the general appearance.

Highlight Specific Items In a Room Using Neon Colors

When using neon colours in interior design, you have to keep certain aspects in mind to not let the bold and bright colours create a mess in the room. One thing to consider is which elements you want to highlight in a room.

When those elements have been identified, use neon colours on or around them to help them pop in the room. The other elements in the room should be neutral and toned down to let the other elements be highlighted. Use neon-coloured accents and frames to focus attention to a particular object or use a bold coloured wall to highlight that part of the room.

Use Muted Versions of the Same Shade

To help tone down a room which has some elements of neon in it, you can either choose light and pastel colours or alternatively, you can use muted versions of the same neon shade to create balance.

For example, for your living room, if you have pink neon coloured accents of a white wall, use a muted pink shade for one of your couches. That will help the wall accents to pop out as well as blend in with the pink sofa to project a vibrant and lively atmosphere.

Similarly, you can use neon coloured cushions on a pastel coloured sofa. Choose a rug which is a muted version of the neon shade of cushions to help balance them out. Using such muted shades in combination with neon colours immediately catches your attention and helps you feel welcome in the room.

Neon Colors That Go Well Together

Neon colours are usually used with light colours or solid deep and dark colours to create a mutual harmony and balance. However, different neon colours can also be used together in an otherwise neutral-toned room.

Some neon colours go really well together and their combination helps in enhancing the room’s outlook and appearance. Deep, neon purple color goes well with coral neon shade. You can have two walls of a room in these two colours. Use black, grey, and white solid coloured furniture to complete the look.

A neon lime shade looks perfect with a neon chili coloured item. In a TV room, you can have the wall behind the TV in lime shade and a chili coloured sofa to project a lively room. Similarly, bright green goes well with a deep, bright blue shade.

These colours will look good in any bedroom design with one wall of green color and the bedsheets of blue color. They both work together in enhancing and uplifting the appearance of a room.

These are some of the things which you should keep in mind while using neons in interior design. However, neons are not for everyone.

You should do your research extensively to consider all the different neon combinations and then decide if you really want such an interior in your home.

Once you have decided that you want to go for it, then utilize these above-mentioned guidelines so that you can use neons in the best possible way in your interior design.
